FOOD | Holiday Indulgences

This a blog post about food. Or, more specifically, how I ate a lot of it over the holidays. I think I'm still full from a meal I ate two days ago. So. Much. Food.

Thank god it's all over. I like the holidays but by the time New Years rolls around, I'm already totally over all the festivities and ready for it to be summer again. Take down the gaudy lights on your house, stop playing 'Last Christmas' by Wham in every shop and just give me some sunshine.

RECENT PURCHASES | Gifts For Myself

We've all been there. You spend all day dragging yourself around shops with the aim of buying presents for others and end up coming home with more for yourself than anyone else. I am pretty good about getting my Christmas shopping done on time, but this year, with university assignments wearing me thin, I was in need of a little retail therapy.

L-R: Sleek 'Au Naturel' eyeshadow palette, GOSH 'Rose Quartz' nail glitter, POP 'Aquatic Glitz' nail polish, POP 'Pink Glitz' nail polish, Hearts & Bows cardigan from ARK

Sleek 'Au Naturel' eyeshadow palette

Marks & Spencer LED lights (a.k.a. the hipster fairy-lights I've always wanted)

It could have been worse. At least this year I don't need to put myself on a shopping diet. That said, I don't think I'll be buying any (/many?) new clothes for a while. Lugging all my stuff to and from uni has made me realise just how much clothing I have accumulated over the past few years. I think my New Year's aim is to downsize my wardrobe somewhat, rather than fill it with new things. We'll see how well that goes.

RECENT PURCHASE | Eyeballin'

ring: Topshop; nail polish (not that you can even tell...): Revlon 'Carbonite'

I saw this ring in the £5 and under jewellery section of Topshop the other day and couldn't resist. It's kind of creepy and a bit tacky but, as you may know, I'm rather a fan of tacky rings.

I'm currently in the middle of writing 3 assignments that are due in before the end of semester so most days I'm sporting some kind of leggings and oversized jumper combo. I go home for Christmas break at the end of next week and I'll be doing some travelling too. I can't wait. A month without being woken up by fire alarms at ungodly hours and stressing about essay deadlines. Bliss.

DAYS OUT | Birthday Lunch

Today was my mum's birthday so she and my sister came up to see me to do some shopping and get lunch at Wagamama. Somehow, I managed to oversleep and ended up dashing out the door in a panic after getting up 20 minutes before I had to leave. After countless mornings where I woke up 10 minutes before my bus to sixth form came, I like to consider myself a pro at the dress-and-dash scenario. I even managed to remember to pack my mum's presents before I left so any disasters were averted, although I think I'll be having some early nights this week to avoid any repeat performances.

UNIVERSITY | Home Comforts

As much as I enjoy being at university, sometimes it's nice to be able to hop on a train and come home for a few days. Being able to sleep in my own bed, have my dinner cooked for me and watch telly are quite a luxury these days.

UNIVERSITY | Getting Organised

I'm not the most organised person there ever was but I do take a strange pleasure in sitting down and filing things for hours on end, so I like to think I'm not too bad at it. I've been at university for nearly 2 months now and slowly, but surely, I've figured out ways to keep on top of not only my workload but also all the mundane little chores I never had to do before. For instance, that pile of washing in your laundry hamper? Doesn't just magically disappear and come back clean and neatly folded like when you lived at home, surprisingly!

I thought I'd share a few tips on how I keep myself organised. After spending the first few weeks here running out of vital food staples, putting off writing essays until midnight on the night before it was due in and generally being a bit all over the place, I decided to get myself sorted out. It's made schoolwork and living on my own quite a bit easier, plus it's a great excuse to buy lots of new stationery.

1. Highlighters (and pens in general)
Basically, have loads of them. You're going to need them. Have them in every colour you can possibly get your hands on and, although I know it's tempting, don't buy the cheap crap. It will only run out after a handful of uses and end up costing you more in the long run. Personally, I like to use Stabilo Boss highlighters and Bic Cristal biros, which you buy in bulk on Amazon.

2. Post-It Notes
The same rules apply as above. Have an endless supply of them that you put everywhere. I am a massive fan of writing lists: shopping lists, to-do lists, etc. I write them out and stick them all over my room and in my diary and anywhere else I will frequently see them. Having constant reminders of stuff that needs buying, tidying, writing or researching keeps me on track. They're also good for sticking on things in the fridge that you don't want anyone else to eat...

3. Notebooks and planners
Use them and use them wisely. I have a separate notebook for every class I take, just so I don't get confused, plus one for any notes and quotes I may need to write down from a book I'm reading (I'm doing English Lit so this is essential), one for anything extra-curricular - if you write for the school newspaper, like I do, for example, and various others for any notebook emergencies that may arise.
A good planner is also essential. I plumped for the Moleskine this year but as long as it's sturdy and has enough room for you to write stuff down in, any will do. Write down anywhere and everywhere you have to be and you'll, hopefully, never be late for a lecture again.

OUTFIT | #33

I, for one, am a massive fan of chillier weather. I'll take any excuse to put on big jumpers and curl up under mountains of blankets so at the moment I'm jumping at the chance to dress around my knitwear.

Also, I think I may have finally found a way to take outfit pictures that doesn't involve my bathroom mirror or balancing my camera perilously on a pile of books. It only took nearly two months of living here...

OUTFIT | #32

Sometimes I surprise myself and break out of my well-established sartorial comfort zone and buy something a little different. Like a hot pink blouse.

Seriously, the picture does not do this thing justice. It is fluorescent pink, like neon or something. You can see it from miles (well, metres) away. In fact, I did. I was ambling through H&M, looking for my usual colour palette: black or striped, or both if possible. The next thing I know, I'm homing in on this blouse and picking it up.

I tried it on (I try on everything. I'm not the kind of shopper that buys something and hopes for the best) and before I knew it, I'd bought it. And, would you know, it's probably my most complimented piece of clothing. As someone who spent their entire life prior to purchasing this blouse thinking I didn't suit pink, it's kind of strange to think that I not only own such a bright piece of clothing, but that I really, really like it.

OUTFIT | #31

I think my love of anything striped needs a blog post all of its own. If you know me in real life, you already know that I will buy any item of clothing if it is striped. I have a problem.

Therefore, this outfit pretty much sums up what I look like 99% of the time. Striped shirt or dress? Check. Blazer? Check. (Not pictured) Those River Island boots that I wear all the time? Check.

RECENT PURCHASES | October 2011

Moving to a new city with a lot more shopping options has definitely done some damage to my bank balance this month. Luckily I don't have a lot of spare time to be popping into town, or I would probably be incredibly poor and surviving on toast until December. I have managed to pick up a few bits and pieces along the way though.

DAYS OUT | Dinner With a Friend

One of my friends from home came up to visit me at university this week and we spent all day in the city shopping, catching up and, of course, eating amazing food. I'd meant to take tons of pictures but only actually managed a few. There were bargains to be had and coupons to be spent, not to mention a whole lot of Mexican food (Chiquito is probably going to become my second home...) to gorge myself on. A girl has to know her priorities!

Also, one night when I was doing some serious procrastinating, I taught myself how to curl my hair with my GHDs. I'm not very good with hair and all my previous attempts at GHD curls had failed miserably but I've figured out a knack now. They're perfect for second or, if you can push it that long between shampoos, third day hair when my natural curl is beginning to fall. Plus it makes a change from straightening all the time.  It's pretty much the only way I want to wear my hair now. Definitely my latest obsession.

OUTFIT | #30

Remember when I said in my last post that I'd have my tripod back by my next outfit post? Well, I lied. I still haven't been home to pick the thing up yet, so the theme of awkward headless outfit shots will continue for at least another post. This time I tried out the classic bathroom mirror picture, complete with smudges on the glass from when I've been putting on my make up. Keeping it classy over here, guys.

I'm actually just getting over Fresher's 'Flu right now so this outfit is from when I got dressed up, with the intention of going out for the night, before deciding I was too ill and promptly changing back into my pajamas. Total wear time: less than 30 minutes. I didn't even make it out of my flat.

OUTFIT | #29

I never thought I'd be wearing shorts in October but for the past week or so, the weather has been gorgeous. 28 degree weather with less than 100 days until Christmas (yes, I just became that person), it's the strangest thing. I've even got a tan. In October. The mind boggles.

This weather also means that all the lovely autumnal clothing I packed for university was incredibly inappropriate. So, I've basically been living in these Zara shorts while I pine for the summer clothing I left at home, having scoffed at the thought of wearing it again once September rolled around.

blouse, top: H&M; shorts, belt: Zara, satchel: White Stuff

Also, I'm still trying to figure out a good way to take pictures in my new room. I'm currently without my tripod too, which isn't helping matters. No angle seemed to work so hopefully in my next outfit post, I'll have sorted all that bother out. In the mean time, my apologies for this faceless and footless picture. It was, I'm afraid, the best shot I got out of the lot.

UNIVERSITY | Moving Out

I moved to university this week and, in typical 'me' style, left all the packing until the last minute. Since arriving, we've had a head wave so nearly all the clothes I brought were wholly impractical but they seemed like a good idea at the time. I'm sure I'll be going home soon and picking up more shoes, clothes and make up. Living without all my stuff is proving difficult.

OUTFIT | #28

This was my first outing with my new boots. I love them. Some people I've shown them to have had mixed reactions. The term 'ugly granny boots' springs to mind. Honestly, that's half of why I like them. Because they are ugly. In a weird kind of verging on granny-esque/something my mum would have worn in the 90s, possibly almost masculine, way. They are not dainty or necessarily all that 'trendy' (god, I hate that word). They're pretty much just a bog standard pair of clompy black boots.

For fear of using too much fashion mag lingo, I love how they look with pretty feminine dresses or with a more androgynous preppy style. In the same way that I like a leather jacket over a floral summer dress. Plus they're really bloody comfy.

I would also like to throw an honourable mention to Illamasqua's 'Rampage' nail polish. I'd been lusting after it for positively ages, years even, after seeing it on Belle Du Jour NYC's blog yonks ago. It doesn't look that special in these pictures sadly. I'd definitely recommend doing a quick Google search to see the true beauty of this polish. It's absolutely gorgeous.

RECENT PURCHASES | September 2011

Most of my shopping lately has been focused on things I need for university. It hasn't been much like the window-shopping for home wares I do when I'm bored either. This was carting around a list as long as my arm, scouring the stores for the cheapest frying pan, realising I have to buy my own toothpaste now, that kind of shopping. There are now two big boxes in my utility room that are overflowing with every essential I could possibly imagine I'd need in my first 12 weeks at university.

In the mean time though, I did manage to get a little 'fun' shopping in on the side. A bit of online shopping here there, taking advantage of the Hollister sale while I was in the States, plus a trip into my local town centre for a few pens and notepads with a detour through River Island...

Clockwise: Hollister 'Super Skinny' jeans, River Island boots, Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, a whole bunch of NYX products

DAYS OUT | Last Weekend in Town

This weekend was my last before I move away to university on Saturday. You've all heard that boring spiel about how it's 'going so fast, I can't believe it' before, so I'll spare you. Although sometimes I do stop and think, how is it mid September already? I was cramming for exams and sitting on a beach in the south of France not long ago, now it's getting dark at half past 7 and I'm leaving town?!

So I had my last shift at work, before I come back and work in the holidays, and spent Sunday by the sea with my family. Not pictured is the part where the rain poured down and, soaked through, we ate greasy chips on a bench.

TRAVEL | Turning 19 in New Jersey

I spent some time in the States seeing family lately. There was a lot of good food, playing with my new baby brother and I also had my birthday while I was over there. I'm 19 now. My teenage years are pretty much over, it's so weird. I don't feel old enough to be 20 next year but at the same time, I do. It's taking some adjusting to.

It feels so strange to be back in the UK where it already feels like autumn after waking up everyday to at least 25 degrees. Also, I'd kill for a Wendy's.

You're never too old for a mirror picture...
